Jerry Powers

Jerry Powers is the Technology Manager-Coatings Americas for Chromaflo Technologies headquartered in Ashtabula, Ohio where he has been for 24 years.  He currently manages the Coatings Development group and the Analytical group.  Jerry received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Allegheny College and his Masters of Science from Cleveland State University.  Jerry is a member of the American Coatings Association, the Cleveland Coatings Society as well as the American Chemical Society.  He resides in Ashtabula with his wife and three daughters.

Low VOC Colorants Around the Globe: Perception, Reality, Marketing

Globalization of products, specifically architectural colorants, is becoming more and more popular and necessary. Paint companies engaging in business globally desire to purchase the same colorants wherever there is business opportunity. Colorant companies market their products as Low VOC in an attempt to separate themselves from local, regional, and global competition. Importing colorants with a Low VOC or ECO label does not necessarily mean those colorants are compliant with North American regulations. There are many different VOC limits, rules, regulations, and test methods that different countries require. A VOC result of <1 g/L in one country using a specific method may contain >50 g/L in another country using a different VOC method. Which test method guarantees compliance with VOC requirements globally? The focus of the work herein, summarizes and compares the various colorants produced in different countries as well as the different VOC method each country uses. As a result, there is a determination of a catch-all method that satisfies the requirements of countries, regions, and government bodies globally.
