Molecular Rebar (nanotube) Technology
Advances in coatings technologies, for many years have been linked directly to VOC reduction, leading to more water-borne formulations, high solids coatings, improved two component systems, powder coatings, and UV curable coatings – all in a wide variety of colors. More recent attention is to make coatings surfaces with higher functionality, such as anti-microbial activity, anti-stat and durability. Although carbon nanotubes have been reported to bring performance enhancements to coatings only a small amount of commercial activity exists, primarily because of lack of availability of discrete carbon nanotubes with surface functionalization for dispersion stability – that and carbon nanotubes are black! Molecular Rebar Design, MRD, has built capacity for over 100 tons/annum of discrete functionalized carbon nanotubes offering easy to use cost-effective masterbatches currently sold in batteries, rubbers, 3D printing and electronics. In this presentation we will focus on MRD’s activities in development of corrosion resistant, solvent and water-borne, epoxy coatings, and electrostatic dissipation coatings for both floors, walls and transparent windows using tailored carbon nanotubes, including routes to retain colors.
PRESENTER: Clive P Bosnyak with co-authors Andrew Stewart and Emily B. Cole
Clive obtained his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Birmingham, UK and after a stint at CWRU, worked 25 years at Dow Chemical Company, mainly in the research and development of many new materials before co-establishing Molecular Rebar Design LLC. He continues to publish in scientific journals and patent extensively. More information on MRD and activities can be gained at www.
