President’s Message March 2024 – In Memoriam

MARK HARLEY

1936-2023

At the February meeting, a moment of silence was held in honor of Mark Harley, former President (1994). Mark remained active in the PSCT as Educational Chair for many years and was influential in maintaining the PSCT Scholarship Program. His service was greatly appreciated.

Mark Anthony Harley Jr., 87, of Oakmont, passed away on December 28, 2023, at Canterbury Place, in Pittsburgh. He was born Monday, Nov. 23, 1936, in North Apollo. He was a Navy Veteran. Before his retirement, he was a Chemist for PPG Industries, Allison Park. He attended Oakmont United Methodist Church and was an adult leader for the Boy Scouts and achieved the honor of the Order of the Arrow. He
enjoyed working on cars, restoring homes, and was a jack of all trades capable of doing electrical, plumbing and plastering work. Mark also enjoyed camping and spending time at his cottage in Crawford County.

President’s Message – February 2023

Dear PSCT Members,

Happy February!  With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we sense love is in the air.  Come out to Rolands in February and show your absolute love for paints and coatings at our next scheduled speaker series dinner!  On Monday February 13th we will host Jerry Powers from Vibrantz Technologies.  Jerry will be speaking on Low VOC Globally and other Regulations.  Since this talk will be so close to President’s Day we would once again like to extend a warm welcome to the PSCT former presidents.  All former presidents can attend the dinner for $15.  Please spread the word.  The talk will begin promptly at 6:00PM.  Join us at 5:30 to put in your food order and relax for a happy 30.  RSVP if you are attending in-person.

Thanks go out to Tim Chen from BYK USA who presented at our January meeting.  Tim spoke about sustainability and biobased coatings with some excellent examples of what BYK is currently offering.  If you’d like a copy of his presentation then you can let me know. It was actually one of the best attended dinner events this year.  Thank you Tim and everyone who joined in-person or remotely.

The application deadline for the Hiram P. Ball Memorial Scholarship is March 15th, 2023.  A template scholarship form will be available at the end of this newsletter or you can access online at https://paintsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/PSCT-scholarship-form-2023.pdf. Applicants must be children of active members who meet eligibility requirements and have attended 4 PSCT events in 2022-2023 or student members who meet eligibility requirements.

Over the next month we will be making some revisions to our by-laws regarding the definition of corporate sponsorship.  In order to update the by-laws, those updates must be posted to the group and then reviewed and voted on over the next meeting.  This month we are doing the posting in a section below and then will be voting on the changes at this month’s meeting.  This change was prompted because there was no definition of this type of sponsorship in the by-laws.

I would like to remind everyone that membership is still open and encourage anyone who is interested in advertising their company or sales/business development team to contact us and let us know you would like to post your cards or advertisement in ¼, ½ or full-page advertisements in our monthly newsletter.  These advertisements help support the operational fund for PSCT.

President’s Message – January 2023

Dear PSCT Members,

Happy New Year!  We wish you all a prosperous and healthy 2023.  I hope you all had a nice holiday break and come into the New Year refreshed and excited for everything 2023 has to offer.

Unfortunately, the December event at the Breakout Room did not happen.  We didn’t have enough people sign up and needed to cancel.  I am looking forward to seeing what we can do to make our Spring event in May a success.  Ideas are most certainly welcome.  Please let anyone on the board know if you have some venues in mind.

Over the next month we will be making some revisions to our by-laws regarding the definition of Corporate Membership. In order to update the by-laws, those updates must be posted to the group and then reviewed and voted on over the next two meetings.  This month we are doing the posting in a section below and then will be voting on the changes in the next months.  This change was prompted because there was no definition of this type of membership in the by-laws.

Please join us on Monday January 9th at Rolands for our monthly speaker series.  Our first speaker for 2023 will be Tim Chen who will be presenting about renewable products and sustainability at BYK.  Tim and BYK have been long-time supporters of the PSCT and his talks always offer interesting perspectives.  We will also be hosting this talk online for those who can’t make it in-person.  Please RSVP either way.

I would like to remind everyone that membership is still open and encourage anyone who is interested in advertising their company or sales/business development team to contact us and let us know you would like to post your  business cards or advertisement in ¼, ½ or full-page advertisements in our monthly newsletter.  These advertisements help support the PSCT.

We look forward to seeing you all at the start of the year!
